Ed001, a question for you, with such inflated figures being mentioned for De Ligt and Maguire, firstly do you think either of them is worth it and secondly of the two of them who do you think is the better of the two?
Thank You.

Shayan

{Ed001's Note - clearly neither of them are worth it, neither of them are special players at all, despite the ridiculous hype.

One is a youngster with potential, good on the ball, tall and strong but with awful positional sense and lack of pace. The other is very similar, big, strong, good on the ball, with awful positional sense but Maguire does have a bit more pace. Both are excellent in the air but lack the positional sense and football intelligence to stop moves early and tend to rely overly on physicality to deal with attackers. Maguire makes those idiotic forward forays which lose the ball almost every time, but de Ligt tends to be much better on the ball, as that is his main skill.

If either could actually learn positioning, they would be excellent, but these days defenders are not taught how to defend, clubs spend all their time teaching them how to be midfielders at the back.

I would say it depends on your circumstances as to which is better. If you are a team that dominates the ball, de Ligt is light years ahead of Maguire, as he is exceptional on the ball. He truly is a midfielder playing at the back. For teams that do not dominate the ball, then Maguire is a better option as he has more physicality than de Ligt to make up for that terrible positional sense they both suffer from.}

Do you see certain parts of defending dying out or being forgotten ed?
Like you said they have no positional sense. Now do these modern coaches know how to coach this or are they not up to standard either?

{Ed001's Note - it will come back into vogue in time and then players will start needing to learn it once more. It goes in cycles, attacking is the be all and end all for a bit, then it gradually shifts back to defending, then goes back to attacking.

There are still some coaches who know how to coach it, there will be some coming through. In time they will be the ones in the ascendancy, as the game has already moved away from possession for possession's sake football in large part.}
